This Is the Inspiring Story of a Cape Verde Man Who Turned Beach Trash into a Local Gym

You know what they say about one man’s trash…

In Cape Verde, the volcanic archipelago off the coast of West Africa, the expression “Tud dret,” (it’s all good) is more than a phrase. It’s a philosophy of life that combines creativity with positivity and has allowed a small country in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean to push through difficult times with a perennial smile.

In a beachside community, a man named Alcindo Almeida Soares embodies the spirit of that philosophy. Faced with scraps of trash washing ashore, Alcindo developed a solution – use that rubbish to create a gym where his community could come to train for free.

They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. In this case, Alcindo placing value on a clean beach, public health, wellness, and the importance of a space to build community has resulted in a treasure for all to enjoy.
