Watch These Guys Surf This Big, Bouncy Wave on Brazil’s Rio Doce

There’s several aspects to this clip one needs to be aware of: first, that river wave looks extremely dynamic and fun. Unfortunately, it’s on Brazil’s Rio Doce, which in 2015 was struck by an environmental catastrophe when the Fundao Dam collapsed, dumping 50 million cubic meteres of mine waste and sediment into the river. The Doce is in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and is still recovering. The disaster also nearly destroyed one of Brazil’s best ocean waves, a fickle left-hander at the mouth of the Doce in the small town of Regência. The mining industry apparently holds huge influence in Brazil because it provides much-needed jobs. But many are afraid something like this could happen again. But these locals don’t seem to mind.
