8 Tips on How to Shoot Snowboarding

They may not get you shooting from a heli in Alaska anytime soon, but they will save you the many headaches.

Read the mags, watch the videos, and be current with tricks. Know what photo editors are looking for. No one wants "the guy in the sky shot." Shoot the entire feature the rider is hitting, try to get good focus on their face and any visible logos. The rider’s sponsors will obviously love that and it will make your images easier to publish. So you’ve saved all summer bussing tables and bought yourself a DSLR just in time for winter. The white stuff is starting to fall from the sky and you’ve just signed a six-month lease on a two-bedroom apartment in Mammoth — or whatever mountain town you’re calling home — with three other dudes and a couple dogs.

They may not get you shooting from a heli in Alaska anytime soon, but they will save you the many headaches I encountered when I began taking photos of snowboarding.
