This Is How Quickly an Avalanche Can Ruin Your Day (or Your Life)

Felix Ehmann and Mario Grinschgl were having a good day, it seemed. The sun was shining, they were doing some hot laps at Sankt Gertraud, Austria, then a quick off-piste run goes sideways when Grinschgl is caught in a slide in an innocuous location one wouldn’t think the slope would slide. But avalanches can happen anywhere and anytime. Think of avys like you would a 100-year flood plan. A slope might not slide this year or 20 years from now. But once every 100, there’s a chance any aspect could go. Luckily Grinschgl rode away from this one.
