The Slave River in Canada’s Yukon Territory has long been a destination for whitewater kayakers–especially the freestyle discipline–thanks to its gargantuan, surfable river waves. But open canoes? Not so much. At least not in the whitewater section. Check out this classic piece of film documenting Peter Starr charging a rapid known as Molly’s Nipple on the Slave. The rapid is big, and thankfully, has a pool after to recover. But Peter pretty much takes a beating. And you thought open canoeing in big surf was gnarly.
