The East Coast has a reputation for being full of lower-elevation tree skiing. It’s not a bad thing. Some of the best skiers and snowboarders in the world hale from the East Coast (ever heard of a guy named Bode Miller? Or that dude named Jeremy Jones?). You’ve heard the saying that goes something like this: if you can ride the variable conditions on the Right Coast, you can ride anywhere.
But alpine-style, above-tree-line skiing isn’t really what the East Coast is known for. Yes, there are places like Tuckerman Ravine in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and a couple of other sacred places. But there aren’t a plethora of lines like the one above posted to Ski the East’s Instagram page. That clip looks, like, well, it looks a bit like Alaska. But it’s actually Andrew Whiteford ripping a pretty sick line in the Chic-Choc Mountains on Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula. Whiteford, who actually bases out of Jackson Hole, makes the Chic-Chocs look pretty insane.
