This was one of the best swells I’ve ever seen on the East Coast of New Zealand. I swam out in the dark at dawn unsure if I’d actually be able to make it out the back. I shot for an hour or so until I took the beating of my life, busted my chin open on my housing, which took on some water. Still stoked I gave it a shot though. I mean, I didn’t buy a water housing to stand on the beach. Photo: Rambo Estrada
The main reason I got into photography was to shoot lineups. When I was younger, I used to drive all over New Zealand, searching for waves and I’d fire off a few lineups before going surfing. It was mostly to make my friends jealous of what they missed out on, as we didn’t have Instagram or the term FOMO back then. Lineups are still my favorite part of surf photography and I love including New Zealand’s natural beauty into my images. Here are five of some of my favorite lineup photos taken around New Zealand.
