There is a lot more to this image than meets the eye. This wave breaks over really shallow and sharp reef and we saw some really bad wipeouts. I was a victim of the reef, as was my friend Ryan (pictured), but it was well worth it for the vision. After this we decided we probably shouldn’t be surfing here at dead low tide again. Austin Robertson is originally from Monterey, California, where his passion for photography first began. He was drawn to surf photography because of the raw and rugged beauty that the central California coastline possesses, but the conditions for surfing around Monterey were often sub par, leading to a greater interest in landscape and surf photography. Spending countless hours driving along the coastline allowed him to explore the creative side of photography and focus on personal projects. Now he travels the world in search of perfect waves and empty lineups, sharing these experiences to inspire people to explore.

Here, Austin shares five lineups that took a little more effort to get to and score than your average wave. But as these shots and Austin’s stories prove, their “juice was worth the squeeze.”
