San Diego's Imperial Beach is going to the dogs. On Sunday, July 13th, the 2014 Unleashed by Petco Surf Dog contest happened, and it was a success, to say the leash.
Tongues on the nose.
Staying low.
We'd like to know if there was in interference call here.
See? You CAN teach old dogs new tricks!
You know what this Boston Terrier is thinking. And it's not about treats.
Full deck traction! Who knew Jack Russels were so '80s?
Sizing up the competition.
Dogs ditch, too.
Waiting for the starter's gun? Wrong sport, Goldie!
This is Spicoli, only in dog form.
Everyone's got to wait for the sets.
Sometimes the drop can be terrifying.
... and once they learn them, they rip.
Now that is a face. A beautiful face.
This guy probably is the leader of some kind of surf gang.
There are no rules in dog surfing.
Party wave!
This was just after a huge barrel. Really, it was.
Not the greatest wave to be pushed into. It's all about wave selection.
You can tell this guy's ready to surf.
Just about to begin the cross step.
If you look closely, he's only on two legs. That is impressive.
All soul. Either soul or confusion.
One of these looks like they're having more fun than the other.
How cool is he?
There is a lot of excitement here.
He wanted a bigger one, you can tell.
So casual.
When the heats wrapped up, so did the dogs.
Less casual.

Events were held for small, medium, and large sized dogs, and the waves showed up to the party. This is the ninth year of the event, which raises money for the Humane Society, and this year’s turnout was an incredible 50 dogs.
If this doesn’t melt your heart, we’re pretty sure you don’t have one.
