This winter was my first time posting up in Hawaii for the season as a photographer. While out there, I thought long and hard about the images I wanted to create and the stories I wanted to highlight. The culture clash between the surfing pilgrimage and the middle-America vacationers was an angle I took a lot of interest in. Here's Julian pulling into a set at Off The Wall and the people on the beach peering out as if they'd never seen surfing before. Photo: Trevor Moran
People love staring at waves, because waves are beautiful. When was the last time you saw someone staring at a soccer field when there was no one running around kicking a ball? Big waves have that terrifying beauty, while small waves are just pretty and serene. Put someone on a surfboard on top of those waves, and you have a recipe for splendor. Or in this case, a recipe for 82 of them.
