Ben Gravy Puts His Big Wave Training to Good Use in Solid 25-Foot Surf

Ben Gravy can officially add Big Wave Surfing to his list of accomplishments.

Surfing in bigger waves isn’t something anyone just leaps into. It’s a learning curve. You have to learn to walk before you can run, as they say, and Ben Gravy’s been putting in the work. For a few days, he practiced towing into a building swell, his confidence increasing as it filled in. “We’ve been training for three full days,” he said. “We surfed 15-foot faces yesterday, and today the faces are supposed to be about 30 foot.” Thirty-foot faces, of course, are big. Very big.

If you’ve never surfed a 10-foot, or a 15-foot, or a 20-foot wave, a 30-foot wave is pretty much unimaginable. But since Gravy’s been building up to this moment, he was feeling pretty dang good about it. “I’m not even that nervous knowing that the waves are going to be massive today,” he continued. “…It’s definitely going to be gnarly, but I think I’m ready.”
