Nearly six years ago, Montgomery “Buttons” Kaluhiokalani lost a long, arduous battle to lung cancer. It was not a death fitting for a legend like Buttons, but then again, no death would be. To many, he was invincible. His spontaneity and timeless style laid the framework for modern-day surfing. But somewhere along the way, Buttons, like many of our heroes, was consumed by drug addiction. Nearly 20 years later, he seemed to have got his life back through sobriety, only to be diagnosed with lung cancer. Shortly before passing, Buttons had this message for us.
