Swell. Once the word's out it spreads like wildfire. Phone calls, forecast checks and trip planning can start to consume the mind for most surfers and surf photographers prior to a swell.
I was lucky enough to meet up with Chris Burkard for some of this swell, along with Keith and Dan Malloy. The passion they all have for the ocean and surfing is beyond inspirational, and watching them all doing what they love these couple days was an epic experience. Januarys been unusual in California. No rain, temps reading some of the hottest in the country, and winter nights masked by summers characteristics. Most have been making the best of it. Photo:Colin Nearman

Hills, wires, and culture. San Francisco’s Ocean Beach was big this Swell. If you look below you’ll find Dan Malloy top turning as if it were playful surf. Photo:Colin Nearman

Swell. Once the word’s out it spreads like wildfire. Phone calls, forecast checks and trip planning can start to consume the mind for most surfers and surf photographers prior to a swell. One thing I stopped to appreciate this last week was the excitement the surf community shares during these periods we have waves. There’s a different atmosphere that takes over the coast, and it is an amazing thing to be a part of.
I covered a lot of ground near home in Central California this last week and early this week, as well as the opportunity to spend some time north of home with Chris Burkard, Keith Malloy and Dan Malloy. With waves just about anywhere, I’m guessing if you read this, you scored an epic session. Hope you’re psyched on winter 2014!
