On this morning it was just me and the fishermen. That is until I gave Ben Currie a call to come join me. I really love this shot and consider it one of my best from land. Just the whole scene, the light, the water laying up on the beach from the initial waves in the set, and the way that guy is leaning over almost in awe of that backlit barrel the same way I would react to seeing a wave like that. I teach Earth Science at a high school in New York City that has an excellent photography program. There, I have had access to a camera, some lenses, and a knowledgable photography teacher who was willing to help me get started by showing me settings and such. I only just picked up photography last October. I had no idea what was to come of it, but what I did realize right away was how stoked I felt when I was shooting.
I picked up my own gear earlier this year and have been just as excited about capturing waves as catching them lately. I have discovered a new passion in life – something that is invigorating and something that I want to excel at. It’s a new challenge for me and, to be honest, I never thought I would find something I would be so passionate about later on in life. I have had the opportunity to shoot from land and, more recently, from the water. Both have their perks and downfalls.
My goal as a photographer is to just keep shooting, developing knowledge about my equipment and lighting, and to maximize fun. I would like to keep discovering new locations and sharing my view of the world through my enjoyment of the ocean. I am constantly chasing light, especially that early morning and late evening light.
