When it comes to surfing in Hawaii, the talent pool is large. Floating near the top, however, is Emerick Ishikawa, a man who shapes surfboards well outside the norm. Like we mentioned earlier this year, “a surfboard shaper should know how to surf. They should know how to surf well enough to be able to explain how concepts of fluid mechanics and dynamics affect your surfing. Otherwise, you’re just buying a surfboard from a guy who makes a thing that looks like a surfboard.”
In a place brimming with good surfers, it’s not easy to get people to sit up and take notice. Emerick does. And with a unique approach, overflowing with graceful-strength and quickness. He does it all on one-of-a-kind surfboards, too. Since it’s July and the North Shore is flat, Emerick crossed the island to Diamond Head for a mellow session on his own hand-shaped interpretation of the twin fin.
