I shot this at a lone stretch of beach in central Florida during Hurricane Leslie. For 2 days this place was on fire with mostly right tubes really opening up. There was a lot of water moving that day, and as I was being ripped north down the beach. I came up and this left was holding up and draining right at me just as a ray of light came out of the clouds to touch the top of the wave. Photo: Mark Wilson
It’s not too often that Florida turns on. But when it does… look out. Come hurricane season, Florida’s balmy, normally placid waters stand up on their own two feet and give birth to some real beauties. And to top it off, the Sunshine State has pumped out some of the planet’s best surfers. Kelly Slater, anyone? The Hobgoods? Lisa Anderson? The Lopez brothers? Yup, all from Florida. There’s something in the water.
