A friend recently told me something that has stuck with me: “Uncrowded is the new firing.”
In today’s surf culture, finding an empty lineup — regardless of wave quality — can be more rewarding than scoring perfect waves in a chaotic crowd. Here in Southern California, you can always find a wave to put a smile on your face. As long as it’s not crowded. And after witnessing what happened at Malibu on August 26, 2024, I couldn’t agree with my friend more.
