Over the final days of the WSL camped out at Lowers, the surfing community turned its eyes to Mick Fanning’s world tour run and the merits or mediocrity of Slater’s 4.17 ride. But beyond the drama of changing leaders, controversial judging, and Brazilian bikinis, Trestles hung onto its grit and glory, waiting out the media storm. You could see it at the edges. On lay-days and after hours, the locals took back their turf, making one thing clear: Long after the surfing industry has moved on to France and Portugal, from groms to old guys, Trestles will still rip.
