Meaningful Moments at the New Jersey Shore

I’ve always tried to take a photojournalistic approach to documenting the surfing culture at the Jersey Shore. I feel that each photo should tell a story and that some surf shots aren’t meant to be shot at 10 frames a second.

Evan Thompson at the Foster's Belmar Pro 2011. Why is this significant to me? It was a valuable lesson learning to move away from everyone else while shooting the same people. I was rejected from a feature because someone with a well known name got the same shot, even though mine were sharper. Plus I didn't write down any of the contestants' names...Photo: Robert Siliato

I am a photographer and a surfer. I have been surfing for over 10 years, but prior to that, I was a bodyboarder. I’ve never lived further than two miles from that beach as I honestly feel I’m addicted to the ocean. I’ve always tried to take a photojournalistic approach to documenting the surfing culture at the Jersey Shore. I feel that each photo should tell a story and that some surf shots aren’t meant to be shot at 10 frames a second. I apply that feeling to my other photographic works as well. My ultimate goal would be to write a book about winter surfing at the New Jersey Shore and the perils surfers face in search of a decent wave.
