Genetics are cool. They’re proof that humans — well, really most living life forms, in general — are basically just walking, talking 3D printers. Some of us are 3D printers that surf well. Take the Ho family, for example. They are surfing royalty and the patriarch of the family, Michael — brother of former World Champion, Derek — set a pretty high bar for his uber-talented offspring, Mason and Coco.
Mason marches to the beat of his own drum, there’s no denying that. But watching this split screen of the father-daughter duo of the Ho family is borderline eery. Almost turn for turn, Michael and women’s CT mainstay, Coco, tear down the line of a left at The Surf Ranch in identical fashion. And we mean literally identitcal.
“So inspired by my peers,” Coco wrote about her weekend at The Ranch. “Oh! And my dad’s impromptu wave… I don’t know if it was his sweet reaction or the surfing communities love and admiration – I was deeply humbled and crying on the inside.”
Manmade waves offer repetition in ways surfing has never seen before. But we certainly haven’t seen this; two members of one family making a pitch for synchronized surfing to be included in the 2024 Olympic Games. Hitting the exact same spots off the top over and over is one thing, but their postures are identical and they do it all with mirror-image mechanics, which, we suppose kind of makes sense…because genetics and stuff.
