Otis Carey’s got a new trophy under his belt. He took home the win at the Australian Indigenous Surfing Championship at Bells Beach this week with a dominant display of the kind of surfing that put him in the limelight. As a result of his win, Carey gained a wildcard entry in the Open Men’s division at the Australian Surf Festival.
“Its hard to explain winning this competition,” he said in a press release. “It’s such a special thing for all the indigenous surfers to get together and that’s probably the most special thing about the contest.”
Carey recently was recently in the middle of a debacle with Australia’s Surfing Life, claiming defamation of character after an article in the magazine described him as “apish.”
Former Pipe Master and World Tour competitor Robbie Page won the Masters Division for the third year in a row, stamping his mark at Bells with authority.
The Women’s final was taken out by Amber Mercy, a Gold Coast surfer who excelled in the small but clean conditions.
