Recently, Team Inertia participated in a team surf contest at the iconic Malibu Point. We may not have won, we may not have had great waves and all of our surfers may not have surfed a wave, but damn it, we had the most fun out of any team on the sand that day.
The SurfAid Cup Malibu 2013 was a ten team, tag team surf contest where each team is asked to raise at least $5,000 for SurfAid’s global disaster relief efforts in order to participate. The night before the contest started, a silent auction was held that raised even more money for great causes and winners received prizes from magnum bottles of wine to clothing to full page ads in Malibu Magazine, among other publications, as well as a brand new Firewire surfboard.
Team Inertia was made up of four surfers (Mark Chu, Zach Weisberg, Alex Haro and Reid Levin) and we, like all other teams who participated, were assigned a professional surfer to join our ranks. We drew Colton Sarlo–son of Allen Sarlo, of Dogtown and Z-Boys fame, who skated for the infamous Zephyr team way back in the day. While we can’t claim a win at SurfAid Cup, we will be back next year to steal the cup from Santa Cruz Syndicate and their ace in the hole, Tom Curren.
