yadin air
Yadin Nicol on January 5, 2008. I had taken the red-eye back from Hawaii and got into LAX at 5:30 am. Driving up the coast, I saw waves I didn’t even know existed popping up all over the place from Malibu to Santa Barbara. Stuck in rush hour traffic, I looked over at the car next to me and saw Tom Curren with his family and decided to follow them, knowing his local knowledge would lead me in the right direction.
Mike Smolowe grew up outside of Philadelphia, where the nearest ocean is an hour away and across another state. He didn’t surf until he was 16 years old, but like so many, he has welcomed the ocean into his life as an equal. After moving to Santa Barbara, he went to Brooks Institute of Photography and graduated just over a year ago. Surfing has taken him around the world and shaped his photography and career into what it is today, and he can’t imagine having taken a more eventful or meaningful path. Recently, he has been concentrating on documenting life outside the ocean as well as in it and loves the direction his work is headed. Take a look at his work at msmolowe.com, or his blog at msmolowe.tumblr.com.
