Sandy Pulses in North Carolina

These were some of the first waves ridden from this storm. It’s a strange thing, riding waves and having fun with a dangerous storm bearing down on you.

Breaking close in, the way s-turns used to be. It’s such a special corner of our Carolina coast that we need to keep it a secret out of respect for the nature of the place. Photo: McCarthy

There is a good bet that a hurricane south of Cape Hatteras will generate some surf on our south facing beaches. This  south facing stretch of coast is broken into several large and small islands, most of which are uninhabited.

We were just starting to get the outer rain bands from the storm along with a fresh 40mph north wind. The surf was building all day, even though it was pushing into a strong offshore wind. You could almost feel the energy over the horizon as Sandy approached. These were some of the first waves ridden from this storm. It’s a strange thing, riding waves and having fun with a dangerous storm bearing down on you.We paid though: all hell broke loose over the next two days as Sandy’s left shoulder hammered the Outer Banks as she passed.

These photos were taken under some of the worst weather that you would ever want to take out your camera gear in.
