36 Snowy, Numbing Surf Scenes

“Chill, it’s just a little snow.” Not something you often hear before surfing? For some, it’s a seasonal occurrence, while for others, it can be a nightmare incarnate.

I took this lineup shot on the East Coast of Canada a couple of years ago. This was a tough morning for me. After a redeye flight from Vancouver with 3 hours of sleep, I jumped in a rental car and met Nico Manos at 7am at this spot. The water was hovering around 32F, and as I was scrambling down the rocks, a set came and sent me around a jetty on the inside. I pulled myself out and walked up to the point for another try. Shooting in the water this day was one of the coldest days of my life. Photo: Jeremy Koreski

“Chill, it’s just a little snow.” Not something you often hear before surfing? For some, it’s a seasonal occurrence, while for others, it can be a nightmare incarnate. Covering every inch of your body with thick, seemingly bullet proof neoprene can be a tedious and undesirable task. If you were born in warmer climates, it may not be one you aspire to either. Regardless of where you were born, however, every surfer should appreciate the resolve it takes to suit up and paddle out in a snow storm or trudge through snow banks to get barreled.
