Surfing Butter on a Hot Plate

“Surfing Butter on a Hot Plate” represents more than some funky phrase or the title to the surf film I’m working on. It pays homage to historical things from surfing’s past and creates a visual depiction of something palatable for the outsider.

The Albacore is a classic and can be surfed by anyone in any size waves. From one-foot to whatever your limits are. Although I wouldn’t push it over 4-6 foot, I’ve surfed 8-10 ft Hawaiian and maxed out J Bay. It’s fun but doesn’t handle so well although it had brief moments of flight. “Surfing Butter on a Hot Plate” represents more than some funky phrase or the title to the surf film I’m working on. It pays homage to historical things from surfing’s past and creates a visual depiction of something palatable for the outsider, unfamiliar with the actual experience of riding a wave. For me, it has become a kind of philosophy that I am sincerely exploring – although mostly during periods when I’m in the right frame of mind. It has influenced my artwork and approach to the process of a craft or expression. Essentially we are losing control while staying in control. The only difference is a chosen few are doing it in the water instead of on land. Mahalo nui loa Nalu Hoaloha. Enjoy.
