Surfing Butter on a Hot Plate

Remi Petersen is one of Steven Sawyer’s best friends, and if you go to J Bay chances are one of these two screw-foots will be in the water tearing apart the wave, Here he is in a serious Alaia pit. Photo: Jared Aufrichtig

“Surfing Butter on a Hot Plate” represents more than some funky phrase or the title to the surf film I’m working on. It pays homage to historical things from surfing’s past and creates a visual depiction of something palatable for the outsider, unfamiliar with the actual experience of riding a wave. For me, it has become a kind of philosophy that I am sincerely exploring – although mostly during periods when I’m in the right frame of mind. It has influenced my artwork and approach to the process of a craft or expression. Essentially we are losing control while staying in control. The only difference is a chosen few are doing it in the water instead of on land. Mahalo nui loa Nalu Hoaloha. Enjoy.
