The Air Up There: 35 Monster Airs

Surfing is no longer just about the wave. The canvas has increased in size to include that airspace above it. And we love it.

Ryan Carlson is incredible. He told me that he gets so low to his board sometimes he bruises his balls. I don't think he ever got the respect he deserves for being one of the best air guys ever. He committed his life to pushing aerial surfing and I have seen him do things that aren't human. Thanks for always blowing my mind Ryan and being such a great guy. Photo: Foster

Airs are really hard to do on a surfboard. Well, landing them, at least. There are so many variables to consider in the attempt, all of which are constantly changing. That’s why the progression is so awesome: it’s really, really difficult, and more and more people are nailing bigger and bigger aerials. Surfing is no longer just about the wave. The canvas has increased in size to include that airspace above it. And we love it.
