5 Minutes of Violent Father’s Day Surf at the Wedge

The Wedge can be beautiful, calm and serene at times, depending on conditions. But the surf can also be extremely violent there, like it was on Father’s Day.

Father’s Day at the Wedge started off calm — scenic, peaceful, and quiet. Families strolled the beach, sailboats drifted in the distance, and the breeze felt like summer had officially begun. It’s the type of morning in Newport Beach, California that makes you forget how wild this place can be.

But down in the far corner, where the rocks meet the sand, the story was very different. The surf got heavy.

Yeah, that tiny wedge of water is anything but calm. It’s loud, violent, and merciless. Even Jamie O’Brien — one of the best big wave surfers in the world — got worked. His board didn’t survive. Others barely did. This edit I put together captures both sides of the Wedge. The peaceful moments above… and the raw power below. Thanks for watching!
