Tim Bonython Calls ‘Open Season’ on Nazaré

It’s winter, and you know what that means. Nazaré is back. So Tim Bonython was on the scene to capture three days of massive swell.

It’s winter, and you know what that means. Nazaré is back.

At Portugal’s Praia do Norte, the sleeping giant has awoken. Of course that also means prolific big-wave videographer Tim Bonython was there to greet it. The Aussie boldly declared that it’s officially the opening of the 2025-2026 season, and with three days of footage in 20- to 40-foot waves to back that up, there’s really no argument.

A murderer’s row of heavy hitters and Nazaré regulars all make appearances in the new edit: Nic von Rupp, Lucas ‘Chumbo’ Chianca, Lucas Fink, Clement Roseyro, Xavi Lucena, Matt Extebarne, William Santana, Rodrigo Reinoso, Gabriel Sampaio, Juan Gastanon, Luiz Henrique, Mateo Bernardie, Pete Luigi and Mikaela Fregonese.

“Here I am, back in the land of the biggest wave on the planet. My 1oth season, here,” announced Bonython at the top of the video. “My timing was perfect. I got in on a Friday. Saturday was the first real day of big surf. It was really quite large – tow and paddle. Then on Sunday it was clean and pristine, but still really mean, and then it came up even bigger on the Monday. So three really good days of swell.”

Enjoy.
