When it comes to surf craft, Kai Lenny can pretty much ride anything. Windsurfer, SUP, gun, shortboard, foil–whatever it takes to have fun, he’s doing it. It’s admirable, whatever your take on foilboarding is. Foiling is the latest focus of the surfing community’s rage–namely, people who’ve never done it and probably couldn’t do it screaming from behind their screens while Kai Lenny hovers above it all on his hydrofoil, smiling the whole time. Here’s Kai foiling at Jaws on a tiny little board prior to surfing in the Pe’ahi event on a much larger board. Since hydrofoils don’t require all that foam to catch a wave and rely almost solely on the foil beneath the board, all that stuff that goes into a regular surfboard–volume, rocker, etc–is no longer necessary. All that’s needed is a place to put your feet, and that’s pretty much all Kai’s got.
