Yesterday, the 2024 Da Hui Backdoor shootout got the green light. The long-running Pipe event is known for not only its North Shore surfing pedigree, but also a unique format in which teams of surfers compete in a non-elimination event.
This year is also notable for including Kelly Slater. Though retirement rumors have long surrounded the 11-time world champion, it means he’ll have at least one last hurrah competing at Pipe. He’ll be competing on the “A New Earth Project” team, along with Koa Smith, Kai Lenny and Bethany Hamilton.
