Right now, in 2018, the average surfer benefits from such technological advances that allow him or her to catch a decent wave hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean, film the whole thing with a small digital camera, and maybe take a phone call in the lineup. Oh, and that’s just if you want to actually wax a surfboard and paddle out. With 360-video so cheap and widely available as it is, anyone can package the experience for viewers at home so they can snap their smartphones into a device on their faces to vicariously live it too.
For now, the virtual reality that’s most widely available lacks touch and smell, which make actual surfing what it is – cold water, the smell of the ocean. Still, we’d bet VR companies the world over are already trying to crack that nut.
