Check Out These Trippy Barreling Wave Clouds

You ever lay in a grassy field and look up at the clouds? You ever mind-surf an empty wave? If you said yes to either of those scenarios, boy are you in luck. Now you can do both at the same time! The video above was captured last Friday in Breckenridge, Colorado. Matter of fact, this isn’t some freak phenomenon, though it is quite rare. Wave-shaped clouds are called Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds (after Lord Kelvin and Hermann von Helmholtz…just FYI). They occur when there is a velocity difference in wind or fluids. In this case, there is a faster wind blowing above a slower one, thus creating this swirling effect. It’s all a bunch of scientific mumbo-jumbo for most people. But all I know is, if I were a bird, I’d be out there getting cloud barreled.
