Boat strikes are an all-too-common occurrence for a variety of creatures. It’s incredibly sad to see, but it’s important that boaters be aware that they can, and do, happen. They can be devastating to whales, sharks, seals, and more.
In this video from Carlos Gauna, who runs a fascinating YouTube channel called The Malibu Artist, the moment a great white shark is struck by a boat was captured on camera.
“This may be the first time such an incident has been documented in real time,” Gauna said. “In this video, I break down the sharkâs behavior before and after the impact, assess the injury, and reflect on what this means for white shark survival in human-dominated waters.”
This video was filmed somewhere off the coast of California, where both sharks and boats are very common. It’s a rare and sobering look at just one of the many threats great white sharks face on a daily basis.
