Learning By Doing with Snowboard Photographer Vernon Deck

One of the sport’s best lensmen gives us an inside look at shooting the pros.

Half Piped

We organized a three-day halfpipe shoot at Kitzsteinhorn. It was super cold and around lunchtime on the third day the wind picked up. Ice crystals from inside the pipe flew up into the air and as I was shooting into the sun it made a ring of reflections. It lasted only a minute and I knew I had captured a special moment.

Editor’s Note: Vernon Deck has been around. The Kiwi has shot Formula1, motocross and of course, snowboarding. And The Inertia Mountain has been lucky enough to receive updates and tutorials as he travels the globe. Deck, a Volcom photographer who’s based in Switzerland, gives us a few gallery images, above, with behind-the-scenes insights as he travels with the likes of Pat Moore and Jeremy Jones. Plus he recently dropped another edition of his “Learning by Doing,” series, below. Number 9 features Bjorn Simons riding Stubai, Austria.
